Pop culture unit 2

 Pop Culture Unit 2

In this Unit of Pop Culture, my classmates and I not only learned about culture, we also learned more deeply about Pop culture. We continued on learning Pop culture by five parts: Read, Think, Seek, Do, and Reflect.

In the reading part, we learned what Pop Culture is and how someone becomes a star. In what is Pop Culture’s lecture, before we know the definition of Pop culture, we have to break down the term into popular and culture. We know popular means the “ of the people” and culture refers to beliefs, behaviors, and thoughts that influence us everyday. If we combine popular with culture, it will become popular culture which means the fabric of our lives. I did not know that pop culture is made up of all the objects, people, events, and places. Also, I did not know the difference between Fads and Trends, which is short time(Fads) and long time(Trends). The second on this reading is how someone becomes a star. We have four popular stars: Adele, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Hatsune Miku. I read their past stories to learn how to become a star from them. Some of them have unique talent and skills, physical attributes, networking and influences from past to current and cultures to trends.

In the seeking part, we saw and learned a lot of different kinds of objects and things in different periods. This also my aha movement because I could know more about objects in different periods. For example, they were so popular in the 1980s, such as Rubik cube, Koosh ball, and home video games. In the 2000s, we had MP3 and Heelys. And In the 2010s, we also have Silly Bandz and crocs shoes. I learned more about interesting and historical objects each year. After that, we divided the class into small groups( 2 for each group) to do each year what songs, shows, movies, products, events, and people are popular. Therefore, we could know more about culture and pop culture for each period of time which made me have a lot of Aha movement about the things I did not know how and what were popular.

Finally, we did the doing part and thinking part, everyone in my class had to research and do the project about one popular star and how they became popular. I also had a lot of lessons from my classmates presentation’s star. For example, Angelina Jolie was presented by Angela. She taught us to keep going even though she had a lot of trouble,  which is similar to Lady Gaga I think. Because she also had lots of trouble like she created a band but disbanded within a year, and Island Def Jam dropped her without explanation after three months. She never gives up after she overcomes it and she is so successful and popular now. I learn different kinds of lessons from each famous star.

I wish I could learn deeper about the true meaning of Pop Culture. The more I learn about pop culture, the more I can understand about the world and what is happening around me.
